New Media VS Old Media

New media such as blogs, videos or even the popular 9gag's "meme" and social websites such as Twitter, Facebook and others are rapidly becoming more popular in the current society. Thanks to popular new media platforms that allows anybody to publish any kind of news, the Old traditional media is rapidly becoming less relevant to our current society.
Philosoraptor - IF NEW MEDIA FIGHTS OLD MEDIA WILL NEW MEDIA WIN OR?

Perhaps new media is set to overthrow old media, a thing of the past, but surprisingly you'd be wrong.

Take for example the first radio station that became popular in the 1920 and continued to grow to over 600 stations in the 1922 used to be the people's only entertainment aside from the television. In fact you would be able to find a radio almost anywhere but in the current day, the radio is confined to mostly cars and mobile phones.

Of the 1346 radio listeners, 70% of them uses mobile phones, 17% say they have FM radio built-in right now

For those who have FM built-in to their mobile phones, how much do they use this feature.
Given that most phones has the Mp3 function that allows people to listen to their favorite music, the usage of radios on the mobile phones would be significantly low but compared to cars which only has the radio for a source of entertainment for those long travels would surely show a larger percentage of users that use it everyday until newer cars also introduced the disk player and sound jects that allowed users to plug in their mobile phones and stream music from their Mp3 once again.

Does all this mean that radio too is dying out and losing the competition against new media?

In fact it is actually the opposite. Popular korean K-Pop idol Kim Taeyeon of Girls Generation even hosts her own radio shows.

Her radio broadcast garners quite a huge amount of listeners (250k for just one uploaded broadcast) and her broadcasts are actually being recorded and uploaded on popular new media platform youtube for fans that are unable to tune in to her broadcast. The radio which is a old media that supposedly is dying out is in fact entering the new media and making a spot for itself.

Focusing on local Singapore, there are also popular radio shows such as muttons to midnight.

They were so popular that, their show even won the best radio show award by mediacorp for 2 years running.

The fact that there is even an award for having the best radio show means that traditional old media is still holding a spot pretty firmly among all the other new media.

In fact the most popular sources of information on twitter or facebook are actually from traditional media and it is because people prefers to share or tweet about news that actually concerns a large amount of people.

New media lacks something very important - Proper information gathering sources. That is what actually fuels the current hype over new media. People may learn from that piece of news through a tweet or a share on facebook, but that tweet or share actually originated from the good old traditional media that new media cannot live without.

In conclusion, New media will be useless without its competitor or in fact it's partner, the old media where everything on new media is actually from old media

On a personal side note radio can never be replaced by any new media. In fact i feel that radio is there to stay at the very least in automobiles as they always broadcast updated news on the road traffic conditions. In my opinion, nothing can replace the radio units found in automobiles.
